Update: Next week paying subscribers will get an interview in their inboxes with a SaaS Account Executive who has recently made the transition from SDR to a closing role, and has been at or above his target the entire time. It gives insight into how to succeed and move up the chain, as well as dealing with bad management/improving your circumstances. It was a great conversation and we’re excited to share it with you! End Of Year Review
As with all sales positions, we’re doing Quarterly and Yearly reviews. Looking at what happened, what went well, what can be improved, and the main takeaway learnings.
As we come to a close it is important to look back on what has happened over the past year. This allows us to begin to understand why we are where we are and make adjustments to our trajectory, ensuring our path is in sync with our goals.
At BTD we posted our first Substack on May 19th a post on being a Producer Vs. a Consumer. We wrote and posted this because it is the main reason the substack was started. The goal is to use your career in sales to learn a number of skills and disciplines so that you can move out on your own and create your own business - if you haven’t already. We believe sales is the best career to set you up with those skills as well as the perfect network of people to facilitate the growth of your business.
Two days later we posted our first major guide, the first post to take off - Breaking Into SaaS Sales.
A few weeks later on July 8th we posted Building a SaaS business from $0 to $2k MRR.
These three posts introduce the goals of BTD.
Don’t just consume, take action and build.
Help others succeed in a high paying career - sales
Help others progress beyond their career and begin earning WiFi money.
Let's take a look at how we did with the goals set out:
Achievement to Target
The Positives
We will start with what went well. We’ve built a substack that has resources that will help anyone who wants to try to break into SaaS sales with no experience, and gives a blueprint on how to succeed from day one. We have created.
We have verified 10 people who have managed to get sales jobs directly from the advice we have given in this substack. (This is what we are most proud of this year, not just out of BTD, but in general)
We have helped a few people start their own online businesses and begin earning WiFi money while they sleep!
The Failures
As with all projects, some things go well, and others do not. Our biggest failure for BTD this year is a long hiatus that was taken just when the substack began to blow up. This lost some faith from you, our readership, and slowed growth.
A second failure is that there have not been any updates on our Building a SaaS business from $0 to $2k MRR series. This is not a dead project, there are updates to give.
These are the two main failures we want to focus on solving moving into 2022. So let's talk about what happened and how we can do better.
The Learnings
We took an unplanned hiatus from writing. The root of this issue comes from the fact nothing we’ve put out on BTD was planned, we started writing when we felt like it and stopped when we felt like it. Posts were put up when we thought of something that would be useful for the readership. This organic approach did lead to only the most useful topics being discussed, but what it left out was regular updates that pre-planning can give. It also means we missed some topics that looking back, would have been very helpful to those who were starting their sales careers.
We have put together a content calendar for BTD that has been fleshed out for the entirety of 2022, and written a few weeks in advance of the content that is to be released. The topics have been chosen based on where our readership seems to be in their careers and has been spread out to help build skills over time. We are VERY excited about what is coming both on the free substack and even more so for paid readers.
This planning is also happening for the SaaS Business series. We’ve got our first update ready to go, it will be released in line with our new upload schedule (To be revealed in January). Our plan is also to get readers involved in this - we want to start not only teaching concepts of sales but through a few options that we have been exploring, give readers the opportunity to build some sales experience that they can put on their resume by selling a product through BTD (Completely anonymously) - Giving them high recurring commissions, as well as industry experience and a job that you can put on your resume to get a better role! (This is a project that is being released Jan/Feb)
Planning for the new year
So that is a short review of what has gone well, what we have failed out on, and how we plan on improving throughout 2022. We should all be doing reviews of our personal lives, our businesses, and our careers. Making sure that our actions are still in line with the goals set. This post is a short-form version of how we look at all things leading up to the new year. It is also how we prepare for Quarterly reviews which will be coming in January - Luckily the team here has all hit targets in Q4, so things will be positive, although we are convinced that our target is going to be blown up for that reason.
Free Substack Update:
Looking forward to the new year we will release our first post on the first Friday of the year, we will go back to our longer-form posts to give as much value back as possible, starting with a deep dive into how we plan for a new Quarter, both as an SDR and an AE. New free substack posts will then be released every Friday following.
The SaaS Business project updates will be released on the last Friday of every month.
Paid Substack Update:
Every Saturday of the year we will release our weekly team meeting for the paid subscribers, this is a Q&A and rundown of new learnings from the week, it includes a lot of things that we do not discuss on the free posts, and will give the opportunity to have any questions or obstacles you’re facing in your own sales career addressed directly.
In these team meetings, we will also be dropping new sales scripts, exclusive interviews (Such as the one mentioned above), tools/tactics that we have built and use ourselves to make dominating within a sales role easier, and a number of exciting surprises that we aren’t going to ruin right now.
For now, rest, relax and be with family/friends. 2021 has been a wild year and we’ve all earned a break.
Sincerely, Thank you from everyone here at BTD, we appreciate every one of you who are reading this. We have had a lot of fun interacting with you, and nothing can capture the joy we have felt from seeing careers started based on the words we have written.
We want to see you all exceed your targets and personal goals in the year ahead, but for now, we’ll just say Happy New Year!
Best,
BTD
